Patient partnerships that make a difference

Our commitment to patient organizations

Hearing the words "you have cancer." Supporting a loved one living with a rare disease. Navigating the world as your vision begins to fade. From diagnosis to treatment, and beyond, everyone's experience is different; everyone deserves to be understood.

At Astellas, we put the patient voice at the heart of everything we do. We are listening, learning, and acting to help drive meaningful outcomes for patients and caregivers at every stage of their health journey.

Our commitment is global, and its impact is visible in everyday moments. In China, it's a WeChat prompt supporting a gastric cancer patient through surgery recovery. In Germany, it's a conversation in a local pharmacy helping a woman understand and manage her menopause symptoms with confidence.

We know we can only advance meaningful change through strong and trusted partnerships. Patient advocacy organizations play a critical role in helping us connect with patient communities, helping to ensure the solutions we deliver reflect real experiences, priorities, and needs.

Our 2025 Patient Engagement Annual Report shines a light on some of the many partnerships we foster to better understand and address patient and caregiver needs. This includes a series of global case studies from Poland to Mexico to Australia, and many others, where Astellas has partnered with patient communities to solve challenges and improve outcomes.

Head of Patient Partnerships

Doug Noland, Head of Patient Partnerships at Astellas, reinforces the importance of creating VALUE with patients, not for them. Collaboration with patient organizations helps ensure that patient communities shape our science, strengthen our decisions, and co-create solutions that meet community needs.

"We are creating a future where patients are at the heart of our work in driving innovation and improving outcomes," Doug explains.

Astellas has made substantial strides in advancing patient centricity over the past several years. A strengthened patient-first culture is helping teams across Astellas work collaboratively with a singular focus, while deepening our understanding and increasing our impact. Examples include:

  • Sponsoring a nationwide disease awareness campaign in Italy led by Vivere Senza Stomaco si Può ODV, reaching 11 million people with messages about gastric cancer symptoms
  • Partnering with the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition (WBCPC) on a global survey exploring how people seek medical information regarding urinary symptoms, gathering insights from 4,000 respondents
  • Collaborating with Over The Bloody Moon in Brazil, where the MenoVest™ initiative earned national recognition for raising awareness of menopause symptoms

These examples reflect the wider transformation across Astellas – one powered by empathy, evidence, and the shared belief that patient partnerships drive meaningful and sustainable impact.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to engaging patients earlier and more consistently across the medicines' development lifecycle. As Doug highlights, understanding what truly matters to patients and caregivers is essential to creating and delivering solutions that reflect real-world needs and help improve quality of life.
